Google AI Mode Ads Statistics 2026: Ad Rates, Industries, Citations and Organic Impact

Driven Metrics research · October 2026

Google AI Mode ads are sponsored placements that appear below or inside the conversational answers in Google’s AI Mode, the AI search experience Alphabet said had passed 1 billion monthly active users in its Q2 2026 earnings remarks on July 22, 2026. Google began testing ads in AI Mode on May 21, 2025. On October 16, 2026, Google confirmed a test that extends those ads to users who connect Gmail, Google Photos and other apps through Personal Intelligence, a group Google had kept ad-free. In this report, “ad rate” means the share of queries where AI Mode returned at least one sponsored text ad.

This is a Driven Metrics original analysis built from published data, not a survey or crawl we ran ourselves. We combined 15 sources dated May 2025 through October 2026: Google and Alphabet announcements, SE Ranking’s keyword-level studies of AI Mode and ChatGPT ads, Seer Interactive and Semrush click data, Steady Demand’s local citation study, BrightLocal’s consumer survey, and trade reporting from Search Engine Land, Search Engine Roundtable and PPC Land. We then recalculated ratios, percentage-point gaps, per-100-query funnels and averages from the raw counts. Every number we derived is labeled as a Driven Metrics calculation.

Our analysis found four headline patterns. Keywords costing $10 or more per click were 2.2 times as likely to carry an AI Mode ad as keywords under $2. Per 100 commercial AI Mode queries, 29.45 carried an ad but only 3.40 also cited the advertiser’s domain, so paid placement and organic citation run on separate tracks. AI Mode showed ads 35.82 points more often than ChatGPT on Education queries but 26.05 points less often on Healthcare. And for local searches, AI Mode sent 79.8% of citations to Google Maps listings in August 2026, making the listing the main organic surface beside local AI Mode ads.

Key statistics: Google AI Mode ads in 2026

  • Google AI Mode returned at least one text ad on 29.45% of 50,032 US commercial keywords, according to a June 30, 2026 SE Ranking study.
  • AI Mode ad presence rose from 24.33% for keywords under $2 CPC to 53.56% for keywords at $10 or more, a 2.2x lift calculated by Driven Metrics from SE Ranking’s 2026 data.
  • 71.1% of AI Mode answers that carried ads showed two ads side by side, which Driven Metrics converts to 1.71 sponsored placements per ad-bearing answer (SE Ranking, July 2026).
  • Only 11.53% of AI Mode advertisers were also cited as a source for the keyword they advertised on, or 3.40 cited advertisers per 100 commercial queries, according to a 2026 Driven Metrics analysis of SE Ranking data.
  • 92% to 94% of Google AI Mode sessions ended without a visit to an external website in Semrush’s study of about 69 million US desktop search sessions from May to July 2025.
  • AI Mode sent 79.8% of local-intent citations to Google Maps or Business Profile URLs, versus 3.1% for AI Overviews, in Steady Demand’s August 2026 study of 50 US metros.
  • 23% of US consumers used Google AI Mode for a business recommendation in the 12 months before BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of 1,002 adults.

How often do Google AI Mode ads appear?

Driven Metrics’ reconciled estimate is that roughly 3 in 10 commercial Google AI Mode queries carried a text ad by mid-2026, and that keyword cost, not search volume, explains most of the variation.

According to a 2026 Driven Metrics analysis of SE Ranking data, Google AI Mode showed text ads on 53.56% of $10+ CPC keywords, 2.2 times the 24.33% rate for keywords under $2.

The ad rate depends on the denominator. SE Ranking’s keyword study and Similarweb’s panel both measure commercial or ad-eligible queries, and both land at or just under 30%. Adthena’s 5.8% counts all US AI Mode queries, including informational ones, so it is a different measure rather than a conflicting one. Driven Metrics’ best planning estimate is about 30% for commercial AI Mode queries in mid-2026, with a much lower share across all queries.

Cost per click is the strongest signal. We calculate that $10-and-up keywords were 2.2 times as likely to show an AI Mode ad as keywords under $2, a 29.23-point gap. SE Ranking found no direct correlation with search volume or keyword difficulty.

AI Mode ads usually arrive in pairs. In SE Ranking’s data, 71.1% of ad-bearing answers showed two ads, which Driven Metrics converts to 1.71 placements per ad-bearing answer and 50.45 placements per 100 commercial queries. Every ChatGPT ad in SE Ranking’s July 2026 dataset was a single card. SE Ranking treats 29.45% as a floor, since results vary by session.

When did Google add ads to AI Mode, and what changed in October 2026?

By Driven Metrics’ count, Google went from its first AI Mode ad test to ads on roughly 3 in 10 commercial queries in 405 days, and reversed its ad-free policy for Personal Intelligence users 213 days after restating it.

The October 2026 test changes who sees AI Mode ads, not how the ads look. In March, a Google spokesperson told Search Engine Land the ad-free setup for app-connected users was not changing, adding, “That isn’t changing right now.” Seven months later, Google’s updated help page, as quoted by Search Engine Roundtable on October 19, 2026, says summaries, excerpts and inferences from connected apps may be used to show ads.

Google set three limits on that personalization, according to the same help page: ads will not be based directly on a user’s Gmail inbox or Photos library, advertisers do not get access to connected apps, and Google does not personalize ads on sensitive categories such as health or religion. Search Engine Land reported on October 16, 2026 that Google had not announced new advertiser controls, targeting options or a wider rollout for the test.

Alphabet’s 1 billion monthly user figure is global, while Google describes its AI Mode ad tests as US-based, so the exposed audience is smaller than the headline count.

Which industries see the most Google AI Mode ads?

Driven Metrics found that AI Mode and ChatGPT monetize different industries: AI Mode showed ads 29 to 36 points more often in Travel, Education and Finance, while ChatGPT showed ads about 11 times as often in Healthcare.

Driven Metrics calculates that Google AI Mode showed ads 35.82 percentage points more often than ChatGPT on Education queries in 2026, but 26.05 points less often on Healthcare queries.

AI Mode’s ad presence spans about 70 points across niches, from 72.38% in Pets to 2.64% in Healthcare, according to SE Ranking. Lead-generation categories sit at the top; informational and YMYL (your money or your life) categories sit at the bottom.

ChatGPT reverses that pattern in sensitive categories. Driven Metrics calculates that ChatGPT showed ads 10.87 times as often as AI Mode on Healthcare prompts (28.69% vs. 2.64%) and 4.23 times as often on News & Politics prompts. In Technology and Business, the two platforms were within 1.42 points of each other.

For organic visibility, the practical read is that roughly every other commercial AI Mode answer in Travel, Education and Finance carried sponsored placements alongside the cited sources in mid-2026. In Healthcare, organic citations had the answer almost to themselves.

Who is buying Google AI Mode ads?

AI Mode’s ad inventory is concentrated: Driven Metrics calculates that two niches, Pets and Entertainment, produced 24.31% of all 25,243 ad appearances in SE Ranking’s sample while accounting for 3.58% of niche-level advertiser slots.

According to a 2026 Driven Metrics analysis of SE Ranking data, AI Mode advertisers in Pets and Entertainment averaged about 6 times the 8.62 ad appearances per advertiser seen across all 20 niches.

Two different ad markets run inside AI Mode. In Pets and Entertainment, 68 and 49 advertisers averaged 51.68 and 53.51 appearances each, which Driven Metrics calculates as 6.00 and 6.21 times the 8.62 average across all niches. In Technology, Legal, Healthcare and News and Politics, the average advertiser appeared only 2.53 to 3.14 times.

In concentrated niches, the same few sponsors repeat across many answers, so the sponsored block becomes a fixed competitor for organic sources. SE Ranking cautions that advertiser-level figures are the most sensitive to keyword selection, so read these shares as the shape of the market.

Do AI Mode ads push organic citations down?

Ads in AI Mode do not take over the cited sources, but they add sponsored items next to them: Driven Metrics calculates that per 100 commercial AI Mode queries, 29.45 showed a text ad, 3.40 also cited the advertiser’s domain and 0.57 cited the exact advertised page.

Driven Metrics calculates that for every 100 commercial AI Mode queries in June 2026, 29.45 carried a text ad but only 3.40 also cited the advertiser's domain as a source.

Buying the ad slot did not buy the citation. When SE Ranking compared advertisers against non-advertising domains of similar strength on the same queries, advertisers were cited no more often. The cited-source list and the sponsored block are filled by separate systems, so earning a citation remains an authority and content task.

The organic cost is attention, not eligibility. Google’s May 2026 Highlighted Answers format places eligible ads inside AI Mode’s recommendation lists, and on the 29.45% of commercial answers that carry ads, organic sources share the screen with an average of 1.71 sponsored items. For brands working on generative engine optimization, the measurable goal stays the same: be in the cited sources, because paying for the slot next to them does not get you there.

How do AI answers with ads change clicks?

No published study isolates clicks on AI Mode ads yet, so Driven Metrics used the nearest benchmarks: AI Mode produced 8 to 11 times fewer sessions with an outbound visit than standard Google searches, and paid CTR held up better than organic CTR on AI-answer queries.

Table 6. Click Benchmarks for Google AI Answers, 2025 to 2026

Note: Seer Interactive measures AI Overviews, not AI Mode; it is the closest published paid-versus-organic CTR series for Google AI answers. AIO = AI Overview.

AI Mode is a low-click environment before any ad appears. Semrush found that 6% to 8% of AI Mode sessions led to an external site in mid-2025, against about 66% of standard sessions without an AI Overview, a gap Driven Metrics calculates at 8.25 to 11 times. Semrush notes the figures come from separate studies.

Paid and organic clicks moved in opposite directions on AI-answer queries. In Seer Interactive’s data, paid CTR on queries with an AI Overview rose 1.57 points to 16.21% between January 2025 and February 2026, while organic CTR on the same queries fell 0.83 points to 2.36%. Being cited still pays: cited brands earned 2.20 times the organic clicks of uncited brands on the same AI Overview results.

Advertisers cannot yet see AI Mode as a separate line in Google Ads. Search Engine Land reported on October 9, 2026 that there is no standalone AI Mode campaign and limited ability to isolate AI Mode ad performance. Until that changes, the cleanest organic read is still Search Console impressions and clicks alongside a traditional SEO baseline. For broader zero-click benchmarks, see the Driven Metrics AI search statistics 2026 report.

What do AI Mode ads mean for local and high-intent searches?

For local searches, the organic competitor next to an AI Mode ad is usually Google’s own listing: AI Mode sent 79.8% of local-intent citations to Google Maps or Business Profile URLs in August 2026, which Driven Metrics calculates as 25.7 times the AI Overviews share.

According to a 2026 Driven Metrics analysis of Steady Demand data, Google AI Mode pointed an unweighted average of 77.75% of local-intent citations to Google Maps across 10 service verticals.

The Google listing is the organic surface that matters most in local AI Mode answers. Eight of Steady Demand’s ten verticals sent 76.5% to 88.0% of AI Mode local citations to Maps or Business Profile URLs, led by dentists at 88.0% and plumbers at 85.1%. Personal injury lawyers were the outlier at 43.4%.

Ad pressure differs sharply by local category. SE Ranking’s Legal niche drew 253 distinct advertisers, the fourth-largest pool in its study, while its Healthcare niche showed ads on only 2.64% of keywords. A dentist and a personal injury firm therefore face very different ad environments, even though AI Mode cites both mostly through Google listings.

Demand is already there. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults found 45% had used an AI tool for a local business recommendation in the past year, up from 6%, and 23% had used Google AI Mode for one. Driven Metrics calculates that about half (51.1%) of consumers using AI for local recommendations used AI Mode. For how a different assistant treats local businesses, see our ChatGPT local business recommendation rate report.

Frequently asked questions about Google AI Mode ads

Does Google AI Mode show ads?

Yes. Google began testing ads in AI Mode on May 21, 2025, and SE Ranking found text ads on 29.45% of US commercial AI Mode queries on June 30, 2026. Since October 16, 2026, Google has also been testing ads for users who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence.

How do advertisers get ads into Google AI Mode?

There is no separate AI Mode campaign. Google says Search campaigns using broad match (including AI Max), Shopping and Performance Max are eligible, and it recommends AI Max and Performance Max for its newer 2026 formats. Search Engine Land also reported a small Google test in September 2026 that let exact and phrase match campaigns serve text ads in AI Mode.

Can advertisers see Google AI Mode ad performance separately?

Not as of October 2026. Search Engine Land reported on October 9, 2026 that advertisers have limited ability to isolate the performance of ads inside AI Mode, and AI Max reports describe matching and assets rather than the AI Mode placement itself.

Do AI Mode ads affect organic citations?

Ads do not appear to buy citations. SE Ranking found the advertiser’s domain was cited for only 11.53% of ad-bearing keywords, which Driven Metrics converts to 3.40 cited advertisers per 100 commercial queries, and matched non-advertisers were cited just as often. The effect on organic sources is competition for attention from an average of 1.71 sponsored items per ad-bearing answer.

Are AI Mode ads personalized with Gmail data?

Partly, for users who opt in. Google’s help page says ads will not be based directly on Gmail or Photos content, but summaries, excerpts and inferences from connected apps may be used to show ads to Personal Intelligence users. Google says it does not personalize ads on sensitive categories such as health or religion.

Sources combined: 15 published sources dated May 21, 2025 to October 19, 2026, including Google and Alphabet statements, two SE Ranking keyword studies (50,032 AI Mode keywords and 50,006 ChatGPT prompts, US), Semrush clickstream data, Seer Interactive’s 53-brand CTR panel, Steady Demand’s 86,645-citation local study, BrightLocal’s 1,002-person consumer survey, and trade reporting from Search Engine Land, Search Engine Roundtable and PPC Land.

Formulas: ratios = value A / value B (for example, 53.56 / 24.33 = 2.20x); gaps = value A minus value B in percentage points; per-100-query funnel = ad rate x overlap rate (29.45 x 11.53% = 3.40); share of appearances = niche appearances / 25,243; average per advertiser = 25,243 / 2,930 = 8.62; placements per ad-bearing answer = 25,243 / 14,733 = 1.71; unweighted mean of verticals = sum of 10 shares / 10 = 77.75%; day counts are calendar days between dated events.

Limitations: all ad-rate data comes from single-day snapshots of US commercial keyword sets, and AI Mode results vary by session. Several sources are published by vendors that sell AI visibility or ad intelligence tools. Click data for AI Mode ads does not exist publicly, so we used AI Overview CTR data as the nearest proxy. Driven Metrics did not run its own crawl or survey for this report.
