Understanding search engine market share is no longer straightforward. Google still commands the vast majority of global queries, but the structure beneath that headline number varies significantly by device, region, and query type. For any business investing in organic search, knowing which engine controls what share, and under what conditions, is the foundation of a sound SEO strategy.
This 2026 data report covers search engine market share from every angle:
- Global all-device share across the major search engines, pulled directly from StatCounter
- Desktop vs. mobile vs. tablet breakdowns that reveal where Google is most and least dominant
- Regional data, including the markets where Yandex and Naver define the competitive landscape
- How AI chatbot platforms are capturing query volume, and which platforms lead that market
- What the combined picture means for how you should allocate SEO investment
Global Search Engine Market Share, 2026
The table below provides the primary 2026 snapshot of global all-device search engine market share as of June 2026, per StatCounter Global Stats. The AI chatbot category uses a separate StatCounter dataset and a different denominator; it appears in its own table further below.
| Search Engine | Global Share (June 2026) | Desktop Share | Mobile Share | Tablet Share |
| 91.27% | 85.93% | 96.05% | 84.62% | |
| Bing | 4.68% | 9.11% | 0.65% | 11.78% |
| Yahoo! | 1.28% | 2.25% | 0.48% | 0.66% |
| Yandex | 0.79% | 0.86% | 0.73% | 0.62% |
| DuckDuckGo | 0.67% | 0.68% | 0.66% | 0.97% |
| Baidu | 0.43% | 0.29% | 0.54% | 0.68% |

Key Insights:
- Google’s 91.27% global all-device share is the headline number, but it masks a meaningful gap between mobile (96.05%) and desktop (85.93%).
- Bing’s desktop share of 9.11% is 14 times its mobile share of 0.65%. For B2B SEO teams targeting desktop-heavy audiences, that gap makes Bing a materially different platform than global averages alone suggest.
- Yahoo! ranks third globally at 1.28%, ahead of Yandex and DuckDuckGo. It holds a stronger position on desktop (2.25%) than on mobile (0.48%).
- Baidu’s 0.43% global share reflects StatCounter’s tracking methodology, which measures pageviews from browsers that carry the StatCounter tag. StatCounter undercounts Chinese users because most Chinese traffic flows through Great Firewall-compliant browsers that do not carry that tag. For China-specific data, CNNIC is the authoritative source and is covered in the regional section below.
Search Engine Market Share by Device
The device split is the most actionable data cut for SEO planning.
Google’s mobile concentration of 96.05% stems from two structural factors. First, Google holds the default search position in iOS Safari, an arrangement confirmed in unsealed DOJ antitrust filings showing Google paid $20 billion in 2022 for the placement and a 36% revenue share arrangement.⁵ Second, Chrome dominates Android and ships with Google as default. Mobile search behavior also skews transactional and local, reinforcing Google’s position on the queries advertisers value most.
Bing’s 9.11% desktop share versus 0.65% mobile share is not a coincidence. Bing is the default search engine in Microsoft Edge, which ships with every Windows installation and dominates most enterprise Windows environments. Bing on tablet reaches 11.78%, its highest share across any device class, likely reflecting enterprise Surface and iPad use in Windows-adjacent workflows. For SEO programs targeting business professionals, Bing deserves explicit technical attention: submit to Bing Webmaster Tools, verify structured data renders correctly in Bing’s crawler, and monitor Bing Search Console for crawl errors.
DuckDuckGo performs more consistently across devices than any other alternative engine, holding 0.66–0.97% regardless of device class. Its audience is privacy-motivated rather than device-driven, which explains the even distribution.
Regional Search Engine Market Share
A single global number hides the reality that the competitive landscape can change entirely at a country border. The table below draws on StatCounter’s country-level data for June 2026, with a methodology note for China.
| Country | Leading Engine | Share | Runner-Up | Runner-Up Share |
| United States | 86.67% | Bing | 8.73% | |
| United Kingdom | 91.19% | Bing | 6.22% | |
| India | 97.85% | Bing | 1.15% | |
| Russia | Yandex | 71.03% | 26.53% | |
| South Korea | 45.91% | Naver | 43.68% | |
| China* | Baidu | ~60% | Bing | ~22% |

United States. At 86.67%, Google’s US share is its lowest among the markets in this table, and Bing’s 8.73% is its strongest. The US is where Bing optimization has the highest return: enterprise Windows environments, Microsoft 365 integrations, and Copilot deployment have expanded Bing’s desktop footprint in the professional segment.
South Korea. Google leads at 45.91% but Naver holds 43.68%, a gap of just 2.23 percentage points. This is the only market in the dataset where a local engine is genuinely competitive with Google at a national scale. Naver’s strength comes from its integrated ecosystem: blog hosting, news aggregation, and ecommerce built around Naver’s own results rather than external sites. Any brand targeting Korean consumers requires a Naver-native SEO strategy.
Russia. Yandex holds 71.03% of Russian search, with Google at 26.53% per StatCounter’s June 2026 data. Yandex’s position is structural and reflects both platform defaults and the constrained operating environment for Google in Russia since 2022.
China. StatCounter’s China figures are not representative because most Chinese browser traffic does not carry StatCounter’s tracking tag. CNNIC data places Baidu at approximately 60% of Chinese desktop search. For any business with a China SEO program, CNNIC is the correct data source and Baidu-specific optimization is required.
AI Chatbot Market Share
AI chatbot platforms represent a separate measurement category from traditional search engine market share. StatCounter tracks AI chatbot share as a distinct dataset, measuring pageview-based traffic to the major chatbot platforms. This is different from the total digital query volume data in the FPS research section below.
AI Chatbot Market Share by Platform — June 2026
| Platform | AI Chatbot Market Share |
| ChatGPT | 76.87% |
| Google Gemini | 7.94% |
| Perplexity | 7.91% |
| Claude (Anthropic) | 3.74% |
| Microsoft Copilot | 3.49% |
| DeepSeek | 0.03% |
Source: StatCounter Global Stats, AI Chatbot Market Share Worldwide, June 2026.⁸
ChatGPT leads the AI chatbot market with 76.87% of chatbot platform traffic. Gemini (7.94%) and Perplexity (7.91%) are essentially tied for second. Claude and Copilot each hold under 4%. This dataset measures traffic to chatbot web interfaces and apps. It does not capture AI-assisted search built into traditional search results pages (such as Google’s AI Overviews), which falls within Google’s search share figures above.
AI Search and Its Share of Total Digital Queries
StatCounter’s search engine dataset measures referral traffic to external websites. That methodology does not capture queries that AI platforms resolve without directing users anywhere. First Page Sage’s Q2 2026 research estimated total digital query volume, including sessions that end entirely within an AI platform.
| Platform | Monthly Active Users | Share of Total Digital Queries | Avg. Session Duration |
| Google Search | 5.3 billion | 77.0% | 6 min 12 sec |
| ChatGPT | ~1 billion (est.)* | 17.9% | 13 min 09 sec |
| Other (Bing, Perplexity, etc.) | 610 million | 5.1% | 4 min 33 sec |
Source: First Page Sage Research, Q2 2026.⁹
*The approximately 1 billion monthly active users figure is a Sensor Tower estimate of ChatGPT’s app MAU, reported by Reuters on June 2, 2026. Sensor Tower and outlets covering the estimate noted it is an approximation, not a verified disclosure from OpenAI.
On a total digital query basis, ChatGPT accounts for approximately 17.9% of all search-like interactions globally. That figure does not appear in referral-based market share tracking because ChatGPT frequently answers queries without directing users to external websites. ChatGPT’s 13 minute and 9 second average session duration is more than double Google’s 6 minute and 12 seconds, reflecting the difference between a conversational platform users engage with at length and a traditional search interface users leave quickly to visit results.
The breakdown by query intent clarifies where each platform captures the most usage:
| Intent Category | Google Share | ChatGPT Share |
| Navigational | 93% | 3% |
| Transactional | 90% | 5% |
| Informational | 71% | 23% |
| Generative / Creative | 29% | 64% |
Source: First Page Sage Research, Q2 2026.⁹
Google leads in transactional and navigational queries because of its rich ecommerce and local results on the consumer side, and because higher-stakes purchases still drive users toward browsing multiple sources rather than accepting a single synthesized answer. ChatGPT’s dominance in generative and creative tasks reflects a format preference: users drafting content or working through complex problems want a conversation, not a link list.
What Search Engine Market Share Means for SEO Strategy
For businesses operating in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Western Europe: Google commands 86–97% of queries in these markets and requires the largest share of SEO investment. Its technical requirements, including Core Web Vitals, structured data, and E-E-A-T signals, are the most demanding of any engine, and satisfying them generally produces acceptable performance on other platforms as a byproduct.
For enterprise B2B teams with desktop-heavy audiences: Bing’s 9.11% desktop share and 8.73% US share justify a dedicated optimization workstream. This means Bing Webmaster Tools submission, structured data verification in Bing’s crawler, and Search Console monitoring. Microsoft Copilot’s integration into Windows and Microsoft 365 means Bing indexing now affects AI-assisted answers inside enterprise productivity tools, not only traditional results pages.
For businesses targeting informational queries: ChatGPT’s 23% share of informational search is a material audience that referral tracking does not capture. Reaching it requires content that AI platforms cite reliably: specific, numerically grounded claims with named sources, clean structured data, and writing that states conclusions clearly rather than burying them. This complements traditional keyword optimization rather than replacing it.
For businesses operating in China, Russia, or South Korea: Baidu, Yandex, and Naver each require platform-native SEO programs. Optimization built for Google’s algorithm does not transfer to these platforms without significant structural rework.
The search engine advertising market was valued at $252.5 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $280.48 billion in 2026, according to Mordor Intelligence.¹⁰ That growth reflects an expanding total market, not a transfer from one platform to another. Businesses that optimize across multiple search surfaces are positioned to capture share of a growing pool rather than compete for a fixed one.
Conclusion
Search engine market share in 2026 is dominated by Google at 91.27% globally, but that single number requires four qualifications to be actionable. Google’s mobile share is 96.05%, making it nearly uncontestable on that surface. Its desktop share is 85.93%, where Bing holds a meaningful 9.11%. Regional markets like Russia and South Korea operate under entirely different competitive conditions. And AI chatbot platforms, led by ChatGPT at 76.87% of chatbot traffic, have created a new query category that referral-based search engine market share tracking does not capture.
The practical result is that a search engine market share-aware SEO strategy now operates across three surfaces: Google (primary, universal), Bing (secondary, desktop and enterprise), and AI chatbot platforms (emerging, informational and creative queries). The weights depend on your audience and geography, but planning for all three is the correct starting point for 2026.
